Managing Director's Directives and Bulletins
L.J. Hartnett started the habit of issuing Managing Director's Directives on an ad-hoc basis to various senior people within GMH, on a variety of subjects which he deemed to be important. The first letter in the table below explains the purpose of these missives and how they were to be handled. The Directives were all numbered, MDD-1, MDD-2, etc. It seems that up to Number 29 were issued, although so far, no record has been found of number 23 and its existence is doubtful.
Hartnett also started issuing Managing Directors Bulletins on other, less confidential issues, a practise followed also by subsequent MDs. These were also numbered MD-1, MD-2, etc. Some 200 issues are tabled below.
[Note that scanning the early Bulletin issues was particularly challanging: some were illegible to the naked eye due to fading, but digital processing has recovered the words to be readable, but sometimes in false colours. Also, some numbers were duplicated.]
